For many U.S. companies, the newest area of opportunity is China. As the People’s Republic develops its economy, doors that have been closed to American businesses are opening, and U.S. firms are walking through in increasing numbers.

Before they do, the wise ones are making sure they know exactly what awaits them on the other side. Until very recently, anyone who wanted to sell or produce goods in China was required to have ties to the country, either through contracts with Chinese suppliers or through joint venture partnerships. U.S. companies were not allowed to directly own businesses or hire workers in China.
